Dealing Short-Handed Games

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Poker is meant to be unpredictable. If this is what experts have to say, it is also true that you need to be unpredictable in your moves as well! If your opponents can foretell your moves or brand you as a tight-aggressive player or loose-passive player, you are giving the game away.

In fact, many experts suggest that you need to inconsistent in the way you play, place bets at different amounts, play aggressively at times, and then fold often to baffle your opponents. In other words, changing pace is a very useful strategy to win games that are short-handed ones with not more than six players.

Consider a scenario where a player would bluff his way through the game. The other players quick to understand his tricks started calling most of his bets. Now, mid way in the session, the player stopped bluffing altogether. When his opponents called, he won the bets and swiftly dealt with various hands he received.

Note here, the players were playing a no-limit game and the changing pace strategy was a success. This strategy is especially successful when you play with good experienced players. Bad players do not realise the difference or not intuitive enough to know what the playing strategy is while you are playing. However, good players instantly know how predictable you are in your game.

While changing your pace, do it randomly so that your style is not picked up by your opponents. For instance, if you play tight-aggressively for 70 percent of the time, and then change your pace, your profits would drop. Also, your moves would be unpredictable even if you change your pace.

So, make a quick makeover without anyone realizing this as soon as possible and then again revert when you feel you can manage the change.
